A Company for the 21st Century
For 20 years, I followed the traditional approach to business. My company hire, fired, and struggled to recruit top talent from the local area. We invested heavily in hardware, software, a phone system, downtown office space, and cool furniture. I commuted to work. Put in long hours. Then commuted home where my wife would tell me about all the activities I had missed, from school plays to play dates to double plays.
At the same time, I was consulting my clients to use the latest technologies to save money and make their sales and marketing efforts more effective. I would advise that Cloud-based and Open Source technologies along with web 2.0 solutions like Skype, WebEx, and YouTube would radically change the way they conducted business in the 21st century.
Soon it became obvious my own business needed to walk the walk. We needed to change fundamentally the way we operated because the world was indeed flattening. And the old rules for doing business were becoming obsolete.
So we changed. Significantly. The company now reflects those changes, and demonstrates a new way of doing business in a radically different world.
We work from everywhere, but mostly from our most favorite places.
We communicate constantly and instantly, although we may not even be on the same continent.
And English is not everyone’s first language. We found great programmers who happen to live in Germany and India. Our best designers reside in Mexico and New York City. All our sites are hosted in California, but our testing software is run on servers in London. Our internal documents are housed on a Google server somewhere in the Cloud. If you call, you’re routed through an online phone system that will deliver you to the right person’s computer wherever they happen to be.
Personally, I still live in Lake Forest, Illinois. But I’m able to work from anywhere – including from the beaches of La Jolla, California, and behind the first-base dugout at my son’s Little League game five blocks from my home.
This is our new company. We deliver a great solution for marketing people that puts them in control of their websites, microsites, and mobile applications so they can market and sell better in a web 2.0 world. And we do it from everywhere.
